Folk Art & Museums
Karakalpakstan, specifically its capital Nukus, has several very interesting museums. The largest and best known is the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art named after I.V. Savistskymore commonly known as the Nukus Museum, or Savitsky Museum which houses the world famous Savitsky Collection, including the world’s 2nd largest collection of Russian avant garde art as well as the largest collection of folk and applied art in Central Asia. In addition, the Local Studies museum and a newly opened small museum at the Academy of Sciences explain not only the impressive flora, fauna and biodiversity of Karakalpakstan, but also the history of Khorezm. Together, these collections allow a more complete understanding of Khorezm, its reach and influence, before going to the countryside to visit the archaeological sites.
